Google updated its spam policy to include techniques that attempt to manipulate Search systems or generative AI responses in Google Search. Spam includes efforts to deceive users or to make content appear prominently, including attempts to rank content highly or to influence AI Overview or AI Mode outputs. Some actors use biased “best-of” listicles and “recommendation poisoning,” which injects instructions into LLMs to treat a website as authoritative. A journalist used similar tactics to appear as the “best hot dog eating tech journalist” in AI search results. An industry of “GEO” has emerged to get brands regularly mentioned and cited by AI search tools. Google states that sites caught manipulating AI responses can be penalized with lower rankings or removal from results.
