May Brought Deep Cuts at Multiple Colleges
Briefly

As academic institutions wrap up the year, various universities, particularly public ones, have announced major layoffs primarily due to financial challenges. These challenges include reduced enrollment and shrinking state support rather than solely being tied to federal funding cuts. Ivy Tech Community College, for example, is laying off 202 staff members in reaction to $54 million in expected state funding cuts. Other prestigious universities such as Columbia, Princeton, and Duke have also reported financial strains, with job reductions and budget adjustments becoming common responses to these pressing issues.
"Because the college's primary revenue sources are state appropriations, tuition, and fees, these developments have had an immediate effect on our planning," Ivy Tech president Sue Ellspermann wrote in a letter to employees announcing the cuts.
Other institutions made steep cuts in connection to the funding challenges posed by the Trump administration, including caps on federal research reimbursements.
