The shift to online education during the pandemic has led to an increase in 'ghost students'âAI bots enrolling in courses to commit financial aid fraud. Robin Pugh, a professor at City College of San Francisco, has seen her roster of disengaged students more than double, leaving her puzzled about the motives behind this phenomenon. As colleges struggle to identify these bots, educators like Pugh find themselves diverted from teaching to focus on distinguishing real students from AI impersonators, complicating the educational process and raising concerns about academic integrity.
It's really unclear to me, and beyond the scope of my knowledge, how this is really happening. Is it organized crime? Is it something else? Everybody has lots of theories.
I am very intentional about having individualized interaction with all of my students as early as possible.
