Limestone University, a historic 180-year-old institution in South Carolina, is set to close after failing to raise the required $6 million to remain operational. Despite efforts to fundraise, the university managed to collect only just over $2 million. This closure comes after a significant decline in enrollment, dropping from 3,200 in 2014 to 1,600 students. The decision leaves hundreds without jobs and aims to support student transfers to other institutions.
Limestone University officials said that after two weeks of furious fundraising and other actions, they collected just a little over $2 million and had no choice but to close its Gaffney campus and online programs.
Though our doors may close, the impact of Limestone University will live on, said Randall Richardson, chair of Limestone University's trustees.
