""LGBTQ+ history is so often not documented, and I think there's a big push for that now. This is going to be huge for us. But it's also going to be a huge part of just documenting the community's history.""
""The rural LGBTQ stories are often overlooked. This puts greater Minnesota on the map of LGBTQ history.""
""Tracking historic markers can be difficult. There is no universal definition for what constitutes a historic marker, and there is no single database that documents all monuments and markers across the state.""
On May 28, Pine City will unveil a historic marker for East Central Minnesota Pride, established in 2005 as one of the first rural LGBTQ+ organizations. The marker will be located in Voyager Park, where the inaugural celebration took place. Local advocates emphasize the importance of documenting LGBTQ+ history, with the marker being the first LGBTQ+ monument on Minnesota's historical registry. The project received support from the Pine City Council and Mayor Kent Bombard. Organizers believe this recognition highlights often-overlooked rural LGBTQ+ stories.
