Eugen Rochko is stepping down as Mastodon CEO after nearly a decade and will move into an advisory role over two to three months while receiving a sizable exit payment. Ownership of the Mastodon trademark and other assets is being transferred to a newly established US nonprofit with a board that includes Biz Stone. Mastodon is a federated network using the ActivityPub protocol, composed of independently managed servers that enforce local rules. Rapid growth after Elon Musk's Twitter takeover peaked at over 2.5 million monthly active users before falling to about 750,000. Rochko cited overwhelming recent years, declining mental and physical health, and a harmful user interaction as reasons to step back and restore work–life balance.
