Benchmark Report Updates Electric Cooperatives' Broadband Progress

The latest Rural Broadband Benchmarking Report reveals that electric cooperatives are significantly increasing their efforts in providing broadband services, with ongoing projects expanding service reach and investment. The report highlights the dominance of fiber as the primary technology for internet service, utilized by nearly all responding cooperatives for both broadband and utility operations. Approximately half of the cooperatives have seen their take rates near 50%, but there are growing concerns about competition in the broadband market.
Compared to our 2022 report, projects covered roughly 50 percent more miles, locations, and dollars invested and 91 percent are still building to new locations.
We continue to see take rates approaching 50 percent, and 52 percent for those in business for more than five years.
Fiber is the dominant broadband technology among survey respondents, with 99% of them using it for home internet service.
At the same time, respondents perceive a growing level of competition. A 62% majority characterize their level of competition as high or very high.
