The NSF-DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory has unveiled stunning images from its Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), a monumental achievement nearly 20 years in the making. This state-of-the-art telescope, equipped with a remarkable three billion pixel camera, is set to deliver an expansive, high-definition survey of the Southern hemisphere sky. The initial results reveal millions of galaxies and over 2,000 new asteroids. The LSST aims to capture vast amounts of data, promising groundbreaking discoveries about cosmic phenomena over the next decade.
According to a press release from the Rubin Observatory, it's expected to generate an "ultrawide, ultra-high-definition time-lapse record of the Universe."
In just its first 10-hour test observation, the LSST managed to capture images which include millions of galaxies and Milky Way stars, as well as more than 2,000 never-before-seen asteroids.
