The Titanic sank in 1912, yet its wreck was located only in 1985 by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel. Initially, the dive aimed to find wrecks of nuclear submarines, USS Scorpion and USS Thresher, under a secret Navy mission. This information remained undisclosed until 2008 when Ballard revealed it to National Geographic. The Navy funded Ballard’s project, allowing him to seek the Titanic wreck only if time permitted after the submarine searches were completed, and later discoveries indicated no sabotage or external weapon caused the submarine sinkings.
The Navy is finally discussing it," Ballard told National Geographic in 2008.
Ballard originally met with the US Navy in 1982 to secure funding for a new type of submersible technology."
The USS Thresher sank in April 1963, and the USS Scorpion followed five years later, in May 1968.
We saw no indication of some sort of external weapon that caused the ship to go down."
