Scientists discover rare intersex crab with male and female features
"The bodies of the crabs displayed male reproductive structures, while other parts showcased female features, including gonopores, said K.S. Anoop Das."
"The crab's habitat was free from environmental pollutants. So we think that the reason for the phenomenon could be related to survival tactics."
Indian scientists discovered a rare intersex crab, Vela carli, in the Silent Valley National Park, Kerala. Out of 120 crabs studied, three exhibited gynandromorphy, displaying both male and female traits. This phenomenon is rare in the animal kingdom and has been documented in various species. Researchers noted that the crabs had male reproductive structures and female features. The cause of this condition is believed to be related to developmental processes rather than environmental pollution, potentially aiding in survival and procreation in the absence of typical male or female members.
