Behold the First Images of the Sun's South Pole
Briefly

For the first time in history, scientists have successfully photographed the sun's poles using data from the Solar Orbiter, a spacecraft developed by the European Space Agency with NASA's collaboration. Launched in February 2020, Solar Orbiter began monitoring our star in November 2021. The mission's unique ability to tilt its orbit 33 degrees out of the solar system's ecliptic allows it to capture previously hidden views of the sun's poles, which were completely unseen due to edge-on visibility from Earth. The success marks a significant advancement in solar observation.
The first images taken by the Solar Orbiter that show the sun’s poles have provided unprecedented views of our star, marking a historic moment for solar observation.
