On Monday night, Australians were treated to a spectacular display from the Lyrid meteor shower, which is one of the oldest known meteor showers, with records dating back to 687 BCE. The event was visible from Bundaberg in Queensland to central NSW and even as far south as Melbourne. Witnesses reported flashes of light and loud sounds, mistaking some of them for thunder. Many residents shared their experiences online, describing the meteors as bright with colorful tails, creating a memorable astronomical spectacle for those lucky enough to see it.
Several lucky residents were able to capture the incredible sight on camera, saying they heard loud bangs and saw bright flashes in the skies, leading some to think it was a thunderstorm.
