Observers can witness the Flower Moon tonight, peaking at 5:56pm BST. Known as the Budding Moon or Seed Moon, it is particularly bright. Visible even before sunset, it will be low in the sky, best viewed from an unobstructed southern perspective. Notably, this full moon is classified as a micromoon, appearing smaller as it's at its furthest distance from Earth. Known by various names culturally, it reflects important native traditions surrounding lunar cycles and timekeeping.
Even though the sun won't have set at this point, the moon will still appear full over the entire night.
The Flower Moon was so-called by Native Americans due to May being the time when flowers started to bloom in the warmer weather.
'Over time, different cultures have given names to full moons across the lunar calendar,' The Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) writes.
Tonight's full moon is also a 'micromoon' because it is at its furthest point from Earth, making it appear slightly smaller than usual.
