Jim Novitsky, diagnosed with a rare neurological disease, finds joy at Heceta Beach using an electric all-terrain chair named Kermit. He enjoys the ocean breeze and measures wind speed as an amateur geologist. Sundays are significant for Novitsky and his wife, Jean, providing a sense of normalcy and independence. David's Chair, a nonprofit founded in honor of David Hartrick, allows people like Novitsky to enjoy the beach at no cost. The organization has expanded and supports many individuals in similar situations.
"I feel at home being by the ocean," says Novitsky, speeding across the beach. A dedicated amateur geologist and geographer, he likes the breeze on his face."
"It's been our salvation," she says. Since its founding in 2017, hundreds of people like Jim have used David's Chair to enjoy the beach at zero cost.
