Charities in Thailand, particularly The Border Consortium, are reducing food aid to over 80% of the 100,000 refugees from Myanmar due to a funding shortfall and rising demands. With the US State Department cutting their budget from a requested $20 million to $15 million and increasing costs due to inflation, many refugees, who have limited job opportunities, are bracing for reduced food support. A recent influx of nearly 30,000 refugees since 2021 exacerbates the situation, leaving the continuation of aid uncertain beyond July depending on donor contributions.
"The point is that our request last year in August was for $20 million, but we got only $15 million to carry them through the 12 months to July."
"There have been several reasons which have made our expenses higher, and now what we will have in hand will be insufficient to continue at the same scale to provide food assistance to the camps' residents."
