Open space district to transfer control of Los Gatos stables
Briefly

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District plans to let the Friends of Bear Creek Stables manage the stables after previous operator Chaparral Country Corporation left due to abuse allegations. As part of a new agreement, Midpen has extended a short-term contract for six months and provided $48,000 to support operational requirements. The Friends are working towards compliance with state regulations and aim to raise $250,000 for initial funding, establishing a partnership with the community and the district to ensure the success of the stables.
To make this successful, we need to be working together, and we use the words partnership and success... it really is a partnership between all of us.
Midpen's assistant general manager Brian Malone gave a presentation establishing several initial milestones that the nonprofit would have to meet before taking charge of the stables.
The Friends also set a fundraising goal of $250,000 to establish an initial operating fund that would help them work through the first years under a long-term agreement.
They are not in compliance with the California State Attorney General Office's registration requirements, but Midpen staff anticipate the group to meet the requirements by June.
