The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced on March 6 that its $5 billion federal fund for emergency rental assistance has run out, leaving many at risk of homelessness. Affected programs originated during the COVID-19 pandemic to support vulnerable groups, including victims of domestic violence. Local housing authorities were instructed to operate without expectations of additional funding. While rental availability is limited and moving may not be an option, HUD maintains other long-term assistance programs like public housing and Section 8, requiring income verification to qualify.
Most assistance programs do have income limits, plus verification of dependent information and paperwork to back it up.
