Donors Support Grad Students Lacking Federal Research Funds
Briefly

President Trump's recent federal executive orders have caused significant disruptions for universities, halting hiring and indispensable academic research. Agencies like the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation have paused their grant-review panels, leaving researchers and graduate students without vital funding. In response, the University of Hawaiʻi launched a Graduate Student Success Fund to aid students affected by these changes. Although only a few students are impacted so far, the full extent of the disruption remains uncertain, prompting concerns about the future of research funding in higher education.
"I and other fellows in the program feel uncertain about future funding from the fellowship. This is especially concerning for me, as the NSF-GRFP is currently my primary and sole source of funding for my graduate studies."
"The extent of the possible impact is unknown," a UH spokesperson said, highlighting the uncertainty faced by graduate students due to recent federal executive orders that affect academic research funding.
