The Yankees won 5-3 in 11 innings, extending their winning streak to seven and gaining ground on the Blue Jays. Manager Aaron Boone thought the team had lost in the 10th inning after a deep flyball by Lenyn Sosa down the right-field line. Catcher Austin Wells attempted to blow the ball foul while the Yankees employed a five-man infield and shifted outfielders, including Jose Caballero, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham. Ghost runner Mike Tauchman was on third base. Grisham allowed the ball to fall foul by inches, and reliever David Bednar struck out Sosa to end the threat.
The Yankees survived by inches, maybe thanks in part to catcher Austin Wells trying to blow foul a White Sox flyball to right that looked like a game-winner. "It might have (worked)," Wells said. "I hope other people were helping to blow it, too." The White Sox had the winning run on third base with one out in the 10th inning of a 2-2 game, so Boone opted for a five-man infield hoping reliever David Bednar would get a strikeout, popup or groundball right at someone.
The shift had Jose Caballero come in from right field to play in front of second base, left fielder Cody Bellinger moving to left center and center fielder Trent Grisham shading over to right center. The Yankees stranded two runners in the top of the inning, then the White Sox's 10th began with ghost runner Mike Tauchman moving from second base to third on Kyle Teel's groundball to second.
