The Yankees survived 5-3 in 11 innings, extending their win streak to seven and gaining ground on the first-place Blue Jays. With a 2-2 tie in the 10th and the White Sox's winning run on third with one out, Aaron Boone used a five-man infield to induce a strikeout, popup, or infield groundball. The defensive shift moved Jose Caballero, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham into unconventional positions. Lenyn Sosa lofted a deep fly down the right-field line that appeared fair; Trent Grisham raced over hoping it would drop foul. The ball nicked foul by inches, and reliever David Bednar struck out Sosa to escape the jam.
The White Sox had the winning run on third base with one out in the 10th inning of a 2-2 game, so Boone opted for a five-man infield hoping reliever David Bednar would get a strikeout, popup or groundball right at someone. The shift had Jose Caballero come in from right field to play in front of second base, left fielder Cody Bellinger moving to left center and center fielder Trent Grisham shading over to right center.
Grisham raced over from right center to get near the flyball while telling himself, "Don't catch it" and "hoping it dropped foul." Grisham could have made the grab for the second out, but that wasn't a viable option. "You don't want to catch it either way," Boone said. "If he catches it, the game's over. He's not throwing anyone out running away (from home plate) like that. "So we needed it to be foul. That was our only chance."
