Yankees activate Luis Gil, place Jonathan Loaisiga on 15-day IL
Briefly

Luis Gil made a remarkable return as a right-handed pitcher for the Yankees, overcoming challenges from a prior injury and winning the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year award. He pitched exceptionally well, starting the season with a 2.03 ERA and ended with a 3.50 ERA, which placed him among the top rookies in the American League. Gil suffered a lat injury in March 2025, leading to a slow recovery that held up his return to MLB. He is rejoining the rotation, replacing released pitcher Marcus Stroman.
Luis Gil was brilliant across the first two and a half months of the season, carrying a 2.03 ERA and 3.08 FIP into mid-June with 96 strikeouts in 80 innings.
After surgery and a slow recovery limited Gil to one MLB start across 2022-23, an injury to Gerrit Cole opened up a spot in the Yankees' rotation.
Gil ended 2024 with a 3.50 ERA, 4.14 FIP, and 171 strikeouts, tied for the most among American League rookies, earning him a narrow Rookie of the Year win.
In March 2025, Gil suffered a lat injury and a slow recovery process delayed his return to the big leagues until recently.
