Anthony Volpe will begin taking drills at second base while remaining on the big league roster. Jos e Caballero returned from the injured list after a right middle finger fracture and drew back into the starting shortstop role for a weekend series against the Rays. Volpe had been recalled to cover shortstop for about a week and a half, and Boone previously viewed Caballero as the starter but will decide nightly. Volpe has extensive MLB experience exclusively at shortstop and has only limited second-base experience from A-ball. The Yankees do not plan to use him at third base, aiming to become comfortable using him at either middle infield spot. Chisholm continues starting most games at second base, with Amed Rosario covering a few starts versus left-handed pitching. Volpe produced five hits, two doubles, and seven walks in 30 plate appearances during Caballero s absence, leading the Yankees to keep him in the majors.
"Jazz Chisholm Jr. remains the primary second baseman. He's starting his 48th of 52 games there tonight. Amed Rosario has gotten the other four starts to occasionally spell the lefty-hitting Chisholm against an opposing southpaw. Chisholm has had a tough year against pitchers of either handedness, but his .239/.317/.372 line in a down season is still better than what Volpe provided at the plate over his first three seasons."
