The Opener:
Gerrit Cole is set to return for the Yankees against the Rays after missing all of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He delivered one-run ball over 5 1/3 innings in his final rehab start and struck out six. Jose Caballero also returns after a minimum injured list stint for a fractured finger, and outfield prospect Spencer Jones is sent back to the minors to make room. The Pirates are expected to promote Esmerlyn Valdez for a series against the Blue Jays. Valdez has produced power in the minors, including 26 home runs across two levels in 2025, and has 10 homers in 46 Triple-A games while lowering his strikeout rate to 21.1%. The Guardians continue a strong run, sweeping the Tigers and winning six straight and nine of 10, with Joey Cantillo pitching well and Patrick Bailey hitting his first home run for Cleveland.
"The Guardians took all four games from the Tigers and have now won six straight and nine of 10. With the White Sox falling to the Mariners, Cleveland now has a 3.5-game lead in the AL Central. Detroit"
