Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expressed disapproval of Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny’s water-squirting celebrations following a goal during the Old Firm derby, labeling it as a 'lack of respect.' While acknowledging the right of players to celebrate, he emphasized that such actions should not provoke or disrespect fans. Despite the jubilant atmosphere, Rodgers cautioned against crossing boundaries that could escalate tensions in the high-stakes rivalry. Following Rangers' 3-2 win at Celtic Park, which marked Celtic's first home defeat, he reflected on his team’s performance, noting a concerning lack of strong starts in recent derby matches.
I understand the jubilation and Rangers players have every right to celebrate with their supporters. But not in that way.
I think it's a lack of respect if somehow a player runs up a touchline and he's squirting a water bottle in a supporter's face.
There's a line that we shouldn't cross. It is a very emotive game, an amazing fixture, and I thought it was great to have the away fans back.
We haven't started well at all in both of those Rangers games. Whether it is a subconscious thing, I'm not sure.
