A Mets 7-2 loss to the Reds included a mental mistake involving base coverage. David Peterson did not back up a play at home plate during an RBI double in the sixth inning. Bo Bichette’s throw to the plate went past catcher Luis Torrens, allowing a runner to advance. Peterson remained near the mound instead of covering the base. Ron Darling criticized the lack of accountability and said base backing should occur every time and happens in every game without being pointed out. Carlos Mendoza said there is no excuse and that a conversation will follow. Peterson accepted responsibility, saying he did not do his job and failed to get to his spot.
"After the game, manager Carlos Mendoza said: "It can't happen. Obviously, he knows that. There's no excuses for it. I haven't talked to him about it, but obviously, there's going to be a conversation. He knows he made a mistake, but there's no excuses." Peterson, who took the loss to fall to 3-5, said: "I just didn't do my job. I didn't get to my spot, and that's on me.""
