New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso expressed regret after a high throw resulted in starting pitcher Kodai Senga suffering a hamstring injury during a game against the Washington Nationals. In the sixth inning, as Alonso attempted to throw to first base after a ground ball, Senga leaped to catch the ball but was injured upon landing. Alonso noted feeling awful about the incident, emphasizing the nature of baseball and his intent to support his teammates, highlighting the emotional weight of being part of such unfortunate moments during the season.
I still feel awful because, for me, I'm just trying to make a baseball play. I tried to make the best throw I could and it just sucks.
Things happen during the season, but I wish it wouldn't have turned out like that. You hate to see anyone go down and it sucks being a part of that.
The ball took me in the hole [Abrams] is a pretty good runner, Alonso said. I was trying to get rid of the ball as quickly and as accurately as I could.
Senga made an unbelievable catch, I just wish it didn't happen.
