Cubs rookie Matt Shaw left the team to attend the memorial and missed the Cubs' 1-0 loss to the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. The team had granted Shaw permission to attend, and his absence was not publicly revealed until after the game. During the Mets–Cubs broadcast, Gary Cohen said leaving a team during a playoff race for any reason other than a family emergency felt wrong. Shaw said he met Kirk in Arizona, described Kirk as a devoted Cubs fan, and said Kirk texted him after nearly every game.
