New York Mets calling up Canadian pitching prospect Jonah Tong to start Friday | CBC Sports

Jonah Tong, a 22-year-old right-hander from Markham, Ont., will be promoted to start Friday night against the Miami Marlins after two outings at Triple-A Syracuse. Tong has struck out 377 batters and owns a 2.54 ERA in 247 2/3 career minor league innings and has fanned more hitters than any minor league pitcher at any level this season. The Mets plan to insert a sixth starter to provide extra rest during a 16-game stretch without an off day. Frankie Montas was shifted to the bullpen and placed on the injured list with an elbow ailment expected to require Tommy John surgery. Nolan McLean recently debuted and has produced a 1.46 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings over two big-league starts. Tong could remain with the major league club depending on his performance down the stretch.
