Jeff McNeil is set to play center field while rehabbing an oblique strain, a position he has experience with. With Jose Siri injured, there's a need for additional players in center. Manager Carlos Mendoza emphasized the importance of this opportunity for McNeil to increase his positional versatility. Additionally, Francisco Alvarez is recovering from surgery on his left hand but is expected to return shortly, highlighting the ongoing injury challenges faced by the team as they navigate the season.
This is nothing new for [McNeil], he has played there before," manager Carlos Mendoza said. "But we wanted to take advantage of this opportunity in the minor leagues, he's on board with it.
Mendoza noted the club also has Tyrone Taylor and Luisangel Acuna as center field options but wants to increase McNeil's positional flexibility.
McNeil will see time in center field during minor league rehab games, potentially shifting to Triple-A Syracuse this weekend.
A little scary, he came out of the game, but he is fine," Mendoza said regarding Alvarez's hand.
