Legal experts call Brooklyn mistrial a blow to prosecutors in Linda Sun bribery case
"Now the defense essentially knows the government's arguments. It knows exactly the evidence that the government will present,"
"will be able to really sharpen and crystallize its defense even further."
"We sincerely hope that the government considers the jury's inability to reach a verdict on any count against any defendant before taking this flawed case to trial again,"
A federal jury in Brooklyn deadlocked on charges against Linda Sun, leading Judge Brian Cogan to declare a mistrial. Prosecutors had presented photos and other evidence they said showed bribes, including a white Ferrari, designer handbags, and a Patek Philippe watch. Sun faces counts including acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China, wire fraud, visa fraud, and money laundering. Her husband, Chris Hu, is accused of laundering bribe money through his businesses, including a Queens lobster export company. Defense lawyers portrayed Sun as a liaison to the Asian-American community and said Hu's businesses were separate; prosecutors plan to retry the case as soon as possible.
