Jonah Tong gives Mets complete package' in bounce-back gem
"That was huge, Tong said. I remember, I was running and I was like, Oh, no, I have to cover home plate.' And then I turned around and I saw the throw and was like oh.'"
"[That play left a] huge impact, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said of the relay throw that cut down Machado at sec"
Jonah Tong surrendered a one-out single to Luis Arraez and then yielded a Machado line drive that one-hopped the left-field wall, but Brandon Nimmo fielded the ball on the bounce and triggered a perfect relay to Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil to get Machado at second. Tong then struck out Jackson Merrill on a looping curveball to escape the first inning and extend farther than he had six days earlier. Six days prior, Tong left a fastball over the plate to Josh Jung, which produced a run, and Tong was pulled after allowing six runs without recording another out.
