Carson Benge seeks to help Mets 'win any way I can' as he battles for Opening Day position
"I'm just going out there and still playing ball. Whatever happens will happen for a reason. So I'm just going to go out there and play my game. I feel like it's been going good. I felt like I came in and I felt like I've done what I wanted to do from the moment I came in. Put some good ABs together, helped the team win any way I can, no matter which way that may be."
"He needs to continue to play his game. There's a lot that can happen between now and Opening Day. He's done everything we're asking him to do. I like how he's playing defense, a couple of reps, a couple of games in center. I like the at-bats. There's a lot to like there."
Carson Benge, a 23-year-old outfielder and the Mets' No. 2 prospect ranked 16th in baseball, is competing with veteran Mike Tauchman for the Opening Day rightfielder role. With ten days until the season opener against the Pirates on March 26, Benge has impressed during spring training, posting a .406 batting average and .972 OPS while recording 13 hits tied for the team lead. He started last season in High-A Brooklyn and finished in Triple-A Syracuse. Manager Carlos Mendoza praised Benge's at-bats, defensive play including center field reps, and overall approach. Benge maintains an even-keeled demeanor, focusing on playing his game and letting results follow naturally.
