St. John's University, located in Jamaica, Queens, New York, was founded in 1870 by the Vincentians. Originally a men's college, it became a university in 1906 and is now a private, Catholic, coeducational institution. The Red Storm basketball program is one of the oldest in the country, ranking ninth in NCAA Division I wins. Under coach Rick Pitino, the team achieved a remarkable 30-6 record in 2023, winning back-to-back Big East titles and reaching the Sweet 16 for the first time in 27 years.
