"It was such a thrill for me because it brought back so many incredible memories of him flying a plane every time we scored into the press. To have Mark here means a lot to me because it's the past."
"For as brilliant and well-traveled a career as Pitino has had, the present has provided his most important contributions, at least to New York. The 73-year-old has turned St. John's basketball around in just three years, taking it from a mediocre program stuck in the mud to one of the nation's elite."
Rick Pitino's St. John's Red Storm defeated UConn 72-52 to win their second consecutive Big East championship at Madison Square Garden. During the game, Pitino reflected on his past when he spotted former Red Storm guard Mark Jackson courtside. Pitino drafted Jackson with the 18th overall pick for the New York Knicks in 1987 after Jackson starred at St. John's during the program's golden era in the mid-1980s under Lou Carnesecca. At 73 years old, Pitino has dramatically revitalized St. John's basketball in just three years, elevating the program from mediocrity to national prominence. The transformation represents his most significant contribution to New York basketball.
