Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie endorsed Zohran Mamdani and expressed full support for Mamdani's affordability proposals, including making city buses free and expanding universal no-cost child care. Heastie said he does not anticipate a conflict with Governor Kathy Hochul, noting Hochul's past support for free buses and stated interest in expanding universal child care. Heastie did not mention Mamdani's proposal to freeze rents for nearly one million stabilized tenants. Governor Hochul endorsed Mamdani two days earlier after months of hesitation and said that, despite disagreements on some issues, affordability is their shared top priority.
