Dawn Staley, a Hall of Famer and head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team, interviewed with the New York Knicks for the franchise's head coaching vacancy before the hiring of Mike Brown. The interview lasted hours and followed the same candidate process used for others. Staley considered her preparation strong and believed she performed well. She would have accepted a Knicks offer to advance opportunities for women and to break barriers. Staley emphasized that the NBA must be prepared for a female head coach and warned of intense scrutiny in the New York market.
