The Knicks reached the NBA Finals in June 1999 as the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed after entering the playoffs in a shortened 50-game regular season that started Feb. 5. The run ended in Game 5 of the Finals, with the Spurs winning their first title. James McDonald, then at Farmingdale State College, described a strong atmosphere around Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell, and Larry Johnson. Hugh McQuillan, a Nassau Community College student who turned 21 in 1999, later said the Finals drought was devastating. The Knicks have won only two titles, in 1970 and 1973, and their pursuit of a third continues with Game 1 on Wednesday night in either San Antonio or Oklahoma City.
