Hochul Reverses Course on Robotaxis
"Based on conversations with stakeholders, including in the legislature, it was clear that the support was not there to advance this proposal,"
"The reversal was welcome news for Uber and the ride-share industry, which is already working with Hochul to reduce car insurance premiums through a proposal that would make it harder for crash victims to be fully compensated for their injuries."
"Members of the business community, as well as disability advocates, also questioned the move, viewing companies like Waymo as a necessary addition to the state's transportation community and substantially safer."
Governor Kathy Hochul withdrew a budget proposal that would have allowed deployment of autonomous taxis in New York State. The proposal would have permitted companies like Waymo to deploy robotaxis in municipalities outside New York City. Support among stakeholders and within the legislature proved insufficient to advance the measure. The reversal was welcomed by Uber and the ride-share industry, which is pursuing a separate effort with the governor to reduce car insurance premiums in ways that could limit crash victims' compensation. Waymo will continue engaging with state officials. Business groups and disability advocates questioned the withdrawal, citing safety and access benefits.
