Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in June's Democratic primary, but launched an independent bid. Republican Curtis Sliwa came in third. A democratic socialist who will be New York's first Muslim mayor, Mamdani has been held up by Republicans and even some centrist Democrats as too radical a candidate to elevate within the party."
