The NY Islanders sign Matthew Schaefer to an ELC
Briefly

Matthew Schaefer signed a three-year, entry-level contract worth $950k with the NY Islanders. As the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, he does not turn 18 until September 15th, allowing the potential for him to play in the NHL shortly after his birthday. Previously, there were considerations for him to develop in the NCAA, but signing the contract made that option infeasible. Schaefer will either play with the Islanders or return to the Erie Otters, with a possibility of a nine-game evaluation stint in the NHL.
