Matthew Schaefer was chosen by the New York Islanders as the first-overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, showcasing exceptional skill and maturity. Veteran player Ryan Pulock praised Schaefer's character, recognizing him as a talented defenseman with a genuine personality. As Pulock enters his ninth NHL season, he aims to mentor young players like Schaefer, emphasizing the importance of fostering confidence and comfort in training camp. The upcoming competition for roster spots is expected to be strong, and Pulock looks forward to guiding the new talent.
Schaefer's just a genuine kid, mature beyond his years. He's been through a lot and has worked for everything. He's a real star player and person joining us, which is amazing for the franchise.
Doing things the right way, going out of your way to make them feel more comfortable. I remember as a young guy coming in, when an older guy comes over and talks to you it makes you feel more comfortable.
The competition in camp will be good with some great young players, some fresh, top-end d-men. I'm excited to see these kids and help them grow.
