Ryan Pulock has re-emerged as one of the NY Islanders' top defensemen this season
"First, looking at Pulock's GameScore average, a stat made by Dom Luszczyszyn in 2016 meant to track an individual player's impact each game. During the prime, Barry Trotz defensive system era, Pulock was consistently averaging above a 0.500 GameScore per game, which is a solid number for a player with his style of play. He even got up to a 0.695 in the 2020-21 season."
"But during the current 2025-26 campaign, Pulock has been remarkably better, averaging a GameScore of 0.698, which would be a career high. For all the non-analytical nerds out there, the eye test proves these numbers to be correct. He has been noticeably better in the defensive zone, winning puck battles and stripping the puck off opponents with ease. Pulock spoke to the media ahead of the Isles' matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night about this,"
Ryan Pulock's defensive performance declined over the past three seasons but has rebounded sharply in 2025-26. Pulock previously averaged above 0.500 GameScore during the Barry Trotz era and reached 0.695 in 2020-21. His GameScore fell to around 0.365 in 2022-23 and 2023-24, and dipped to 0.139 last season. In 2025-26 Pulock is averaging a 0.698 GameScore, a career high. The improvement shows in his defensive-zone play, winning puck battles and stripping pucks from opponents. Pulock credits confidence and making plays that may not always show on the scoresheet. He has been reunited with Adam Pelech on the back end.
