NY Islanders deliver complete effort against Toronto Maple Leafs in 3-1 win
"It's huge. We haven't been playing necessarily full 60 minute games. I'd say that's been something that we wanted to work on. I felt like tonight was a 60 minute effort."
"Brayden Schenn scored his first goal as an Islander to open the scoring. The goal came at 4:15 of the first period when rookie forward Calum Ritchie spun a slick no-look backhand pass to Schenn near the right hash marks. Schenn buried the chance on the power play to give New York a 1-0 lead."
"Sorokin handled the rest, finishing with 26 saves as the Islanders killed all three Toronto power plays while converting twice on six opportunities with the man advantage."
The Islanders secured a 3-1 victory over the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena, extending their recent success to 4-1 in their last five games. Brayden Schenn scored his first goal as an Islander on the power play in the first period, followed by Calum Ritchie's goal minutes later. Steven Lorentz cut the lead to 2-1 early in the second period, but Emil Heineman restored the two-goal advantage. Ilya Sorokin recorded 26 saves while the Islanders' special teams dominated, converting twice on six power-play opportunities and killing all three Toronto power plays. Matthew Schaefer recorded an assist in his first NHL game in his hometown.
