Matt Martin gives heartfelt gift to NY Islanders' rookie Matthew Schaefer
"It's a Pig (Piguet) watch, and Marty waited two years on a wait list to get it. He was like, 'I really wanted to get this for you.' It was right around Breast Cancer Awareness Month when he was getting it. He's like, 'I thought it was the perfect fit for you.' He got it engraved on the back. It's a ladybug because I saw a lot of ladybugs when my mom passed. And then he put, 'love you,' in my mom's writing."
Matt Martin and his wife Sydney welcomed Matthew Schaefer, a rookie for the NY Islanders, into their family of six. Schaefer has been featured playing with Martin's daughters and spending time with family members including Boomer Esiason. During Christmas, Martin gifted Schaefer a luxury Audemars Piguet watch that he had waited two years to obtain. The watch was engraved with a ladybug symbol meaningful to Schaefer's late mother and the phrase "love you" in her handwriting. Schaefer lost his mother at age 16, and the Martins' home has become a meaningful refuge for him. Martin, known for his playing toughness and fighting ability, has revealed a compassionate side through his mentorship and care for Schaefer.
