"We just had an honest conversation. We talked about what we thought went well, what went wrong [last year]. And after that, I thought it clicked. I think you know those things. It's gotta be a good fit for the both of us, and I think it was."
"You need to be able to be on the same page as your coach. If you're not on the same page as your coach, it's very tough for it to work. Patrick and I are definitely on the same page. From our discussions over the summer, and how we feel we want to play, and what we feel about the lineup, we talk about the lineup every day. At the end of the day, coaches coach, managers manage."
Long-time president and general manager Lou Lamoriello was dismissed and Mathieu Darche was hired as the new general manager. The new GM and head coach Patrick Roy held frank conversations over the summer and agreed their working styles fit. They maintain daily communication to fine-tune a collaborative relationship while preserving clear boundaries so final lineup and coaching decisions rest with Roy. Darche provides input on desired playing style and lineup, and stresses the need to be on the same page. Darche has been impressed by Roy's controlled intensity, which is used to strengthen the team.
