Justin Haak, a rising star from NYCFC's academy, has taken on a prominent defensive role after James Sands' exit. Making his debut in 2019, Haak established himself as a key player, having started every game this season and captained during the US Open Cup. He emphasizes adaptability, having shifted from midfield to defense alongside Thiago Martins, helping maintain a sturdy defense with six clean sheets. The new dynamics in the team reflect both Haak's growth and his commitment to supporting his teammates, creating a strong bond on and off the pitch.
We started [playing together] last year and felt really strong together - we had some good games, we continued to work on it, Haak said.
I feel very comfortable in either position, and one thing I've taken away is to always be ready for whatever the team needs.
