Bombshell email shows top aide to AFT boss Randi Weingarten raising concerns about Mamdani's lack of experience
""A lot of our discussion here is on blocking [ex-Gov. Andrew] Cuomo and winning the election, which is important," "But the ability to govern also needs to be an important consideration," "And winning an election does not necessarily translate into the ability to govern." "It is important to face squarely what happened ... It has not gone well," "Because Johnson was our candidate, there is no public discussion on the left of what went wrong.""
""But something has clearly gone wrong and it can't just be attributed to our enemies.""
""Mamdani has no experience in city government," Casey said."
Leo Casey, an assistant to American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten, sent an email to a Democratic Socialists of America list in May expressing concerns about candidates' governing ability. Casey warned that winning an election does not necessarily translate into the ability to govern and pointed to Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's high disapproval as a cautionary example. The United Federation of Teachers stayed neutral during the New York City Democratic primary but later backed Zohran Mamdani after his June 24 nomination. Casey said he voted for Brad Lander and stated that Mamdani lacks city government experience.
