Zohran Mamdani proposes raising New York City’s minimum wage to $30 by 2030. Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo proposes raising it to $20 by 2027 from the current $16.50, estimating benefits for 800,000 New Yorkers. Republican Curtis Sliwa proposes cutting red tape to attract employers. Economists warn large increases could reduce income inequality but also harm some employers, eliminate jobs, and accelerate automation. Small business owners express concern about affordability. Mokafé owner Youssef Mubarez notes employees need a living wage but calls $30 potentially unaffordable. Any change would require approval from the state Legislature. Federal minimum remains $7.25.
