Zohran Mamdani pledged to further embrace his Muslim identity in response to intensified attacks by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his surrogates, calling the criticisms racist and baseless. Mamdani spoke surrounded by faith leaders outside a Bronx mosque and described indignities faced by Muslim New Yorkers, including his aunt avoiding the subway after Sept. 11 because of a head covering. He recalled family advice to keep his faith private when entering politics. Cuomo accused Mamdani of playing the victim and denied widespread Islamophobia. A Cuomo campaign social post caricaturing Mamdani was removed and called an error, while some Democrats accused the attacks of leaning into Islamophobia.
