Speaking at a morning press conference in Queens, the 34-year-old democratic socialist revealed an all-female transition team led by Elana Leopold as executive director."
"In his first television interview since defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa on Tuesday night, Mamdani stressed the urgency of preparation. We owe it to this city to be ready on 1 January to start delivering, he said on Wednesday. We have 57 days and those are 57 days to start to do the work of preparing."
Zohran Mamdani announced a transition team to implement an ambitious policy platform and begin governing on 1 January. The all-female team is led by executive director Elana Leopold. Co-chairs include Maria Torres-Springer, Lina Khan, Grace Bonilla, and Melanie Hartzog. The selection of Lina Khan signals an intent to bring bold reformers with antitrust experience into the administration. Mamdani emphasized urgency, saying there are 57 days to prepare to start delivering. With his victory, Mamdani becomes New York City's first Muslim mayor, first of South Asian heritage, first born in Africa, and the youngest mayor in over a century. The incoming administration faces formidable obstacles, including repeated threats by Donald Trump to withhold federal support.
